SoCal Race #1: Lake Perris

After a few months of not racing it was finally the first NICA SoCal High School race! The course is a wide open course. Lots of room to pass, one gradual climb, and mostly flat. With no technical sections, it made for close racing!
Once the race started I was up front because of my first call up. The whole first lap was a good group of 10 slicing back and forth. I was mainly concerned to keep calm the first lap. Second lap on the climb we made a break from the group including myself, Turner Conway, Blake Wray, and Tydeman Newman. Once we got to the flats we started pace lining to make the gap more major. In the third lap their were small attacks in our group but I just kept calm and didn’t let it bother me. I had a feeling it was going to come down to a sprint finish between the four of us. So I just went through every scenario to make it not a close sprint finish. At the beginning of the last lap Blake Wray got a flat tire. So that left me, Turner, and Tydeman. We pushed each other trying to get each other crack on the last lap. But all of us were strong; holding on. We started getting to lappers, only less than a quarter mile left till the finish. Third to last corner was a lapper on the inside of a tight corner. Tydeman was on my inside. I went wide into the corner then cut sharp to the inside. Making Tydeman brake in the corner because of the lapper Tydeman had no room to go anywhere. Then I started my sprint early and didn’t look back. I had a small gap and just went to the line with it. I was so happy to come across the line in first! Been wanting to win a Varsity race since Middle School. Surprised myself to get the first win at Perris. Just not a course that suits me well. I’m super excited to see what the rest of season is going to look like!
Couldn’t have done it without my High School Team SMVC and Bear Development! Thank you Main Street Cycles and Tony Gamberutti for getting my Trek Top Fuel dialed for the race and making me love mountain bikes as much as I do! Along with Julia Violich supporting myself and the amazing Bear Development Team! Also, Stephen Ettinger having me focused on day to day goals and future goals! During the race I had time to focus on what I’m fueling with; GU Energy Tabs, Waffles, and Gels worked perfect! I think that made me feel better without any bonks or cramps!
